Meniscus tear and surgery treatments

The meniscus is one of the important structures in the knee to attenuate shock and loads and all tears should be repaired if possible to maintain as much meniscal tissue as possible. However, a new study has shown by Espeijo-Reina at al. published in this month edition of Arthroscopy (Esepjo-Reina et al. Arthroscopy 2019, March 35 (3):857-863) that only 35% of all tears are repairable. If the tears are associated with an ACL injury nearly half of all tears can potentially be repaired.

Open or Keyhole Arthroscopic Surgery for Shoulder Dislocation?

Arthroscopic or keyhole surgery has involved significantly over the past 25 years and failure rates are similar to open surgery. However significant experience and subspecialty training is required to master these techniques. With keyhole surgery 3-4 little cuts are traditionally made: one cut at the back is used to introduce the camera into the joint, 2 cuts in the front are then used to repair the labral tear again using suture anchors and sutures. Occasionally a fourth initial cut at the back of the shoulder is required to repair labral tears more accurately.
