The gluteus medius muscle and tendon are important abductors. They help in keeping the pelvis aligned and allow walking without a limp. Tears are often compared to tears in the shoulder and often called rotator cuff syndrome or tear of the hip joint. The tendon commonly tears from the attachment at the greater trochanter. Tears can be caused by sudden bursts of activity, poor flexibility, trauma, chronic inflammation, overuse or age related changes. These tears may mimick chronic trochanteric bursitis and result in weakness and limping. If non-operative treatment fails the tendon can be repaired back to bone. This is a highly successful surgery.
