The ischial bursa is located on the sit bone (ischial tuberosity) of the pelvis in the buttock area. Bursitis can cause dull pain with climbing or walking uphill. Pain with sitting on hard surfaces can also occur. Initial treatment starts with rest, stopping all activities that cause symptoms and anti-inflammatory medication. Occasionally a cortisone injection is helpful. The piriformis stretch can be helpful and if prolonged sitting causes pain a pillow (donut) helps to reduce pressure.
