The outside rim of the hip socket is surrounded with cartilage. This tissue is also called hip labrum. Labral tears can be caused by injury, degenerative hip conditions and structural mechanical problems. Repetitive and high impact movements associated with football, soccer, hockey and golf can lead to a tear. Degeneration and osteoarthritis of the hip generally results in slow erosion of the cartilage making it more prone to tears. Abnormal hip movement or bony spurs (femoroacetabular impingement: FAI) cause an imperfect fit of the head into the socket and can also cause labral tears. Symptoms include locking, catching or clicking sensations, pain in the groin or buttocks and stiffness. Labral tears do not always cause symptoms. An MRI is often required to diagnose a labral tear and injection of contrast material into the hip joint helps to increase accuracy of the test. Initial treatment includes anti-inflammatory medication and physical therapy. If symptoms persist surgical treatment should be considered. Surgery is done arthroscopically and may include repair, reconstruction of the damaged tissue with tissue from your body or from a donor and/or debridement only. If FAI is also present it should be addressed at the same time.
