A traumatic dislocation occurs when the humerus is pulled out of the socket. Depending on the direction of force it can dislocate to the front (most common), to the back or inferior.
A traumatic dislocation requires reduction in the emergency room. The labrum is torn off the bone and can result in ongoing instability. In young patients surgical repair is recommended and significantly reduces the recurrence rate. With atraumatic tears when the shoulder dislocates with minimal force it often pops back by itself and is often associated with lax joints and hyperflexibility. Initial treatment is always physiotherapy and diligent adherence to guided training can avoid surgery. Rarely surgical treatment is required.
